CHOKORA is a powerful and illuminating feature film written and to be directed by award-winning filmmaker Amyn Kaderali. In the vein of such Academy Award-winning films as “Slumdog Millionaire,” “City of God, and “Tsotsi,” CHOKORA will take audiences on a journey into the lives of the world’s least fortunate in order to shine a global spotlight on their struggles and spark needed social change.

CHOKORA will be shot on-location in Nairobi, mixing handheld, immersive camerawork with potent and cinematic imagery, brought to life by a cast of rehabilitated former street kids. They will be our guides in telling this story, helping to hone truthful, specific and realistic performances in order to keep the film honest and real. A largely Kenyan crew will also be employed as key collaborators to ensure authenticity.

The end goal of CHOKORA is to spread much needed awareness on the plight of glue-addicted street children and to inspire compassion and active involvement in bringing about social change. In addition, we want the film to positively affect the communities depicted in the film; a large portion of the film’s proceeds will be used to fund an arts academy in Nairobi to foster young creative talent in the areas of acting, music, dance and visual arts.

In short, CHOKORA will be a very real and honest depiction of the lives of street kids in Nairobi. It will be a story that is light and dark, hopeful and brutal, joyful and painful, like life itself. It will pull no punches and speak to universal truths while also showing global audiences a dire situation they may have never known existed (and compel them to get involved).

Most important, CHOKORA will provoke change, save lives and leave a legacy for the children of Nairobi who will have contributed to its story.

But we need YOU to help us make this happen.

Kimani, a bright Kenyan boy, must join a gang of “chokora” in order to survive on Nairobi’s mean streets, but the life of petty crime and glue-sniffing threatens to derail his dreams of one day becoming a pilot and escaping a life of poverty.
